Black Bear Pass is a high-alpine 4x4 route connecting US-550 to Telluride. The route climbs to over 12,000 ft before descending west into the Telluride side, where conditions become significantly more technical. The upper section is typical mountain pass rock, shelf road exposure, and variable conditions depending on weather. Past the summit, the route narrows and transitions into a steep descent with tight switchbacks below Bridal Veil Falls. Travel is one-way westbound on the Telluride side. High-clearance 4x4 and experienced driving are required, especially for the descent.
